Synopsis
An artist-activist for thirty years my take on social engagement is to seduce the viewer into a web of imagery that appeals to their sensibility while startling their consciousness into taking action. I switched genres from painting to filmmaking after Judy Clark lost her bid for clemency in 2011. I teach art in the College Program at Bedford Hills prison where Judy has been interned, and I knew her from the program. I am affiliated with an artist’s project on the Lower East Side, (Cage.org), that encourages artists to tackle art forms that rely less on product-making. I asked Judy if I could build a conversation - and later a film, between two women of the sixties, in their sixties, using her poetry as the armature.
